Unusual, unconventional and a tad bit ugly – perhaps, the only acceptable way to explain the return of street trends like thick platform footwear, giant dad shoes, loose co-ords, mesh tops, micro skirts, corsets, and voluminous Victorian sleeves for Summer ’23. Just when you thought some of these styles will never see the daylight again, the “gone for good” trends make a comeback that’s hard to overlook.
Inspired by the past:
Fashion trends have a cyclical nature, and styles that were once considered outdated or “gone for good” often make a comeback in the fashion cycle. This revival can be influenced by various factors, including nostalgia, reinterpretation by designers, and shifts in cultural and societal influences. Designer Mudita Jaipuria of Warehouse, shares some trends that have made resurgence in the recent season. She says, “Flared jeans which were popular in the 70s but faded out of fashion in subsequent decades. Just like that shoulder pads, animal prints and neon hues were a prominent feature of 80s and 90s are now back in style. These examples illustrate how trends that were once considered passé can find new life in the fashion cycle.”
Given the seasonal nature of the fashion business, it is not surprising that items that were previously seen as outdated are now in high demand. The appeal of these reborn trends rests in their capacity to present an original viewpoint, bringing an element of nostalgia and originality to contemporary fashion, feels designer Nivedita. She informs, “As fashion enthusiasts eagerly embrace these offbeat trends, other forgotten gems are also making their way back into the limelight. Think flared jeans, retro sportswear, oversized blazers, and neon colors. To make the most of these unconventional trends, try to pair thick platforms with cropped wide-leg pants and a tucked-in graphic tee for a bold and edgy look. Dad shoes can be effortlessly incorporated into an athleisure outfit with joggers and an oversized hoodie. Loose co-ords can be elevated by accessorizing with statement jewellery and a sleek belt. Midi skirts can be combined with a tucked-in blouse and ankle boots for a chic and timeless ensemble.”
Social acceptance:
While fashion is constantly evolving, the shift from celebrity role models to niche micro influencers on social media is a solid driving factor to push the envelope with “shocking” and “repelling” styling. “Just in the past few years, I’ve seen so many trends that were popular in my childhood disappear and make a comeback. It’s all cyclical because as designers we tend to take inspiration from the past and create new interpretations of them for the modern consumer,” remarks designer Poonam Mitta. She adds, “The Gen Z kids have also created a huge impact on the direction of the fashion industry. They’re really driving a change toward clothing that’s more comfortable and practical. It’s still focused on being trendy and stylish, but there’s a shift from stilettos to platform boots, micro skirts to mid-length outfits, and a general trend towards more airy, loose co-ords.”
Fashion and fads go hand-in-hand and what was a big no-no a couple of years back is at its peak right now. The early 2000s have a great dominance on the present fashion zeitgeist, believes designer Janhvi Mehra of the label Layrrd. She points out, “Fashion seems to be more fluid now than ever and hence, more versatile. I feel that if you style one of the off-beat trends with an evergreen staple from your wardrobe then it’s a no-brainer. The waistcoats and corsets that were considered out of fashion are now widely accepted by the younger generation, which they have adapted in their own way and wearing it with denim and skirts.”
Wear it with confidence:
Fashion is now a tool for self expression and people have been even more confident and versatile with trying new trends and style which gives them the power to display their personality and boldness. Shubhangi Jalan of the label Saangi, cites some recent examples and says, “The corsets and voluminous sleeves were a part of the Victorian era which are now in fashion. Similarly loose co-ords which were gone from the fashion cycle are now becoming a beloved staple in everyday dressing. Post-pandemic as we have embraced our comfort in equal measure as our style, loose co-ords and resort wear have elevated to mainstream. Being versatile in nature these can be styled creatively to switch from workwear to evening parties. Both printed co-ords and monochromatic co-ords are trending in the market now. Apart from this cut out dresses and power suits have been trending in the market and are growing with passing time.”
In a surprising turn of events, once-dismissed trends have made an unlikely comeback in fashion, demonstrating the successful return of unfashionable items. It’s the right time to embrace the unexpected and re-imagine fashion’s forgotten gems. Designer Renesa Rastogi of the label RCKC Aurum, highlights, “The high-waist and relaxed fit mom jeans were popular in 1980’s and 90’s but fell out of favour in the 2000’s, and have now made a huge comeback. Similarly, platform shoes lost popularity in the 90’s and are now a popular trend amongst fashion enthusiasts. When offbeat or previously unfashionable trends make a comeback, it can be exciting to incorporate them into your wardrobe. When trying out new trends stick to neutral colours, this allows the focus to be on the trend itself, rather than being overwhelmed by bold colours or prints.”
Can’t miss out on accessories:
From the craze for huge, neon sneakers that were once a big no-no to the thick Birkenstock sandals – everything that was possibly considered anti-fashion is now a hit. In fact, Birkenstock footwear is such rage due to its comfort, high functionality and versatility that the brand is paying a tribute to its iconic models with a capsule collection. Also, the fanny packs that were once reserved for older people are now a hot favourite accessory among younger, cool travellers and fitness enthusiasts.
Additionally, many jewellery trends that were once considered non-fashionable are back on runway and streets. Jewellery designer Archana Aggarwal mentions, “Choker necklaces that were missing for long time, are now making a grand appearance. These pieces can be paired with formal dresses for an elegant look, or with casual outfits to up the glam quotient. Brooches and oversized earrings are also back in vogue. Brooches can be attached to jackets, scarves, or even used as a hair accessory to create a vintage yet classy look. Oversized earrings, on the other hand, can be harmonized with an off-shoulder dress or a top for a fun and fashionable look. Accessories such as nose rings and layered necklaces are also making a comeback and can be styled in various ways to create unique looks.”
