Her Instagram account with over 113 K followers (when we last checked) describes her as a “vegan showrunner. Jack of all trades master of none, got a Big Brain and a Teeny BumBum.” If you still haven’t heard of Michaela Coel, you must drop everything and find out about this brilliant comic star whose unapologetic views on religion and race could make you quite uncomfortable.
In 2016, she won the BAFTA for Best Female Performance In A Comedy Programme and Breakthrough Talent for the TV show, Chewing Gum. The talented actress behind the hit Netflix show has been talked about a lot lately since the release of her show’s second season. At the recently held 2017 Olivier Awards, Coel flaunted a dress designed by her mother, and wrote a funny message on her Instagram post, “I will let you know when my finances back up the lifestyle that these pictures are conveying. I will let you know with no shame. For now – I’ll see you on the train.”
She is currently working on her next big project, an upcoming musical ‘Been So Long’ directed by Tinge Krishnan, starring George MacKay, Ronke Adekoluejo, Luke Norris, and Rakie Ayola. Written by Ché Walker, Been So Long was originally written for the stage. It features the story of Simone (Coel), a single mum who meets a handsome stranger named Raymond (Arinzé Kene) while out for a rare night on the town with her friends.
